Windows 98 Configuration for Existing Setup The tutorial below is for
users with PCs which came pre configured with
a commercial Internet service-provider (ISP) account, or if you already
have an existing account. Double click on the My Computer icon (usually on the top left hand corner of your computer desktop).
You will be presented with
a window that will look a lot like this. If you do not see a "Dial-Up Networking" icon, scroll the window until you see it, then double click on it. You will now see a window that looks like this (it will look slightly different or have fewer icons):
Double-click on the Make
New Connection icon. You will then be presented with the first of their "Make New Connection Wizard" series
of dialog boxes:
You should replace "My
Connection" with a name such as Methownet Dial-up.
Also be sure to check that the correct modem is selected. in this
case there is
only one modem, a Standard 56000 bps K56Flex
Modem, which is the internal modem.
Now click on the Next button. You will see the second screen for the "Make New Connection Wizard".
Fill in 996-4434 for the "Telephone number:". Leave the "Area code:" blank unless you will be using this account outside of the 509 area code. Be sure that the country listed is United States of America. If the "Country code:" field is showing anything else, click on it, and select United States of America from the drop-down menu.
Click on Next again. You will now see the last screen for the "Make New Connection Wizard":
Click Finish.
You'll will now see a new icon in your Dial-Up Networking window, your newly created Methownet Dial-Up. Right-click on it, and choose Properties from the menu that pops up. You'll now see the "properties" dialog for your newly-created connection.
Unless you expect to be traveling with your computer, you can disable the "Use area code and Dialing Properties" option by deselecting the checkbox:
Next, click on the Server Types tab:
You will now see the second section of the properties dialog:
Note that the "Type of Dial-Up Server" box lists "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows98". If it doesn't, simply click on the box and select it:
You will notice that there are checkmarks beside many of the options listed: only one of them is necessary, and you should disable the rest or else you will find your dial up"login" process unnecessarily delayed. Deselect the checkmarks beside everything other than TCP/IP; your dialog should finally look like the example above.
Click on the TCP/IP Settings tab
Select the "Specify name server addresses" button. Enter these addresses for
the primary and secondary DNS numbers: Now, click the OK button twice, and you're done. In order to connect to Methownet, you will need to double-click on the connection icon inside the "Dial-Up Networking" folder that you have just created -- if you have followed this tutorial completely, it will be the one called "Methownet Dial-up".
